Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

What is an MRI?

An MRI scan (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a medical test used in the UK to create detailed images of the inside of the body. It uses strong magnets and radio waves to look at organs, tissues, joints and the brain - and importantly, it does not use radiation.

MRI scans are commonly used to investigate things like ongoing pain, joint or spine problems, neurological symptoms, soft tissue injuries and internal organs. Because the images are very detailed, MRIs are especially useful when doctors need a clearer picture than an X-ray or CT scan can provide.

In the UK, MRI scans are available through the NHS when a GP or hospital specialist refers you. Waiting times can vary depending on urgency and location. They’re also widely available privately, which can mean faster appointments and more flexibility.

During the scan, you lie still on a table that moves into the scanner. The machine can be noisy and the space is quite enclosed, but the scan itself is painless. Most scans take between 20 and 45 minutes, and some may involve a contrast dye to help highlight certain areas.

MRI results are reviewed by a radiologist and shared with the referring clinician, who will then explain the findings and any next steps.

Is Shockwave Painful?

Shockwave may be uncomfortable to start with. However, the treatment is delivered with a low amount of energy at first which is increased as you get used to it. The treatment stimulates and effectively supports the body’s self-healing mechanisms and creates an analgesic effect. Many patients report immediate pain relief following shockwave therapy. If you experience pain after treatment, you may use ordinary non-prescription painkillers. Do not use anti-inflammatory medication or apply ice as this may interfere with the healing process.

What are the advantages of shockwave?

Shockwave therapy is recommended for patients who have already had previous conservative therapies that have provided little or no relief. Recent research has shown benefits in both new and old conditions. You may be able to have shockwave before trying other conservative measures.
