Lymphatic Drainage Massage Explained: What It Is and Who It Suits

A gentle, rhythmic massage technique that people often seek for puffiness, recovery and relaxation. Here is what it actually involves.

What Is Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

Your lymphatic system helps carry fluid and waste products around the body and plays a part in immune function. Lymphatic drainage massage uses very light, slow, rhythmic strokes on the skin, working in a set direction. It is much gentler than sports or deep tissue massage, and should never be painful.

Why People Choose It

People commonly book lymphatic drainage massage for:

  • General puffiness or a feeling of heaviness in the legs
  • Relaxation and a break from stress
  • Support during recovery, where it has been cleared by their medical team
  • Swelling during pregnancy, with the agreement of their midwife or doctor

Many people find it deeply relaxing. Evidence for specific health benefits outside of specialist settings is limited, so we would encourage realistic expectations.

What About Lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is a long-term medical condition and needs specialist assessment and management. A relaxing lymphatic drainage session is not a substitute for care from a lymphoedema specialist. If you have been diagnosed with lymphoedema, speak to your specialist team before booking.

Who Should Check With Their GP First?

Please speak to your GP or specialist before booking if you have:

  • A current infection, or an area of inflamed or broken skin
  • Heart or kidney problems
  • A history of blood clots or deep vein thrombosis
  • A current or previous diagnosis of cancer
  • Unexplained or sudden swelling in one limb

Sudden swelling, redness or pain in one leg needs prompt medical assessment, not massage.

What a Session Involves

You will be asked about your health and what you hope to get from the session. Treatment is carried out lying down, usually with minimal oil, and sessions are calm and unhurried. Afterwards, drink water as normal and take it easy for the rest of the day if you can.
