You've Had an MRI. What Does the Report Actually Mean?
Should you rest, keep active, or get treatment? If your GP has simply told you to rest for a few weeks and take painkillers, but you're still no clearer on what your MRI report actually says, our specialists are here to help — completely free, no obligation.
Received Your MRI Report and Don't Fully Understand It?
Medical reports are written for other clinicians, not patients — so it's completely normal to come away from an MRI with more questions than answers. Rather than sitting with an uncertain report and a GP appointment weeks away, you can speak to one of our musculoskeletal specialists directly.
- Phone or face-to-face expert advice
- A clearer, plain-English understanding of your imaging report
- Direct access to our musculoskeletal specialists
- An impartial guide on the right next steps after your MRI
- Completely free, no obligation to book further treatment

About John Winters
For those who don't yet know me, my name is John Winters — I'm a specialist musculoskeletal physiotherapist who has worked within professional sport, the military and the public health sector.
Over the years I've seen so many people left holding a scan report they don't understand, frustrated at being told to simply rest and take painkillers, with no real explanation of what's actually going on or what to do about it.
That's why I set up JW Physio Clinic — to give people in Essex a genuine alternative: a clear explanation of what your imaging shows, and a proper plan to get back to being active, working, and spending time with the people who matter to them.
We've been nominated for numerous therapy awards, and most recently won the South England Physiotherapy Clinic of the Year Award in 2022, 2023 and 2025. Our team's experience across professional sport, the armed forces and specialist NHS settings has helped make JW Physio Clinic one of the most highly rated clinics in Essex — we're still trusted by Olympic and professional athletes, as well as high-profile individuals, because of that experience and skill set.
Get Started NowIs Physiotherapy Right For You?
If you've been let down by long NHS waiting lists, a rushed appointment, or a report that raised more questions than it answered, you're not alone — and it isn't your fault. Public healthcare services are stretched thin, but that shouldn't mean you go without a proper explanation and a clear plan.
If your MRI has confirmed a problem that's stopping you doing the things you used to enjoy, we understand how unsettling that is — and we've helped a great many people work through exactly that, back to being active and pain-free.
What We're About
You can feel like yourself again with the right support from specialists genuinely dedicated to your recovery. We build tailor-made treatment plans rather than applying a standard protocol regardless of what your scan shows — because understanding your specific findings and goals makes all the difference to how we treat you.
Get Started NowThe Power of Taking Action
Kate was dedicated to recovery. Kate had unresolved neck pain for over four months, and had followed her GP's advice to rest and take painkillers — but every time she returned to work, the symptoms came straight back. She came to us stressed, having been signed off work, with her mental health affected too. From her first consultation, Kate was fully committed to attending every session, and we were able to support a full recovery through targeted treatment and rehabilitation.
Henry needed expertise and a plan. Henry came to us with lower back pain that had progressively worsened over four weeks, and had to stop playing competitive football as a result. Rest and ice weren't helping. After an in-person assessment, we built an immediate plan to address the pain. Henry's discomfort reduced significantly through our treatment techniques, and after six weeks of weekly therapy he was back in full training and competitive matches at the weekend.
MRI & Recovery FAQs
Many patients notice meaningful improvement within 4 to 6 weeks of regular therapy, though this varies depending on what your MRI has shown and how long the problem has been present.
We generally recommend one or two sessions per week for the fastest recovery, though it's ultimately up to you how often you attend, and your physio will advise what's right for your specific findings.
Our team is trained across a range of approaches — musculoskeletal, neurological and sports rehabilitation, acupuncture, spinal adjustment techniques, guided exercise, sports massage and cupping therapy — tailored to what each patient actually needs.
Our team brings substantial experience treating a wide range of muscular and skeletal issues, and regularly helps patients interpret and act on their MRI findings.
Waiting Around vs Getting Seen Quickly
If you're weighing up where to get help, it's worth knowing what the two paths tend to look like in practice.
Going down the standard route often means: waiting weeks or months for a follow-up appointment to discuss your MRI; a brief, checklist-style consultation; being handed repeat prescriptions or referred toward surgery you may not need; and sometimes, without the right guidance, the problem getting worse in the meantime.
Coming to JW Physio Clinic generally means: being seen quickly, often the same week; a clear, plain-English explanation of what your MRI actually shows; genuine one-to-one rehabilitation sessions rather than a generic handout; and a clear plan for what comes next.
Why Work With JW Physio Clinic
- You'll be in control of your recovery, rather than pain and uncertainty dictating what you can and can't do
- Many patients are back to normal activity within around three months
- You can avoid an unnecessary reliance on pain medication
- You won't be stuck on a long NHS waiting list for a follow-up explanation
- You'll leave your consultation with a clear, specific plan for what comes next
How Does It Work?
Rather than waiting weeks for a follow-up appointment, you can request a consultation and often be seen the same week. Instead of a rushed, checklist-style session, you'll get a clear explanation of your MRI findings and a bespoke rehabilitation plan built around them. And whether you're in clinic or not, our reception team is on hand to answer questions and help with anything you need along the way.
This initial consultation — whether by phone or face-to-face — is completely free, with no obligation to book further treatment.
