AXA Health Physiotherapy

JW Physio Clinic in Loughton welcomes patients whose treatment is funded through AXA Health, offering hands-on, personalised physiotherapy with straightforward support around referral and authorisation.

Welcoming AXA Health Patients

AXA Health is one of the UK's largest and most established private medical insurers, and we're pleased to welcome AXA Health members for physiotherapy at our Loughton clinic. Whether you've taken out cover as an individual, through a family policy, or as part of a workplace health scheme provided by your employer, our approach to your care is exactly the same as it would be for any other patient: a thorough initial assessment, a clear explanation of what we find, and a treatment plan built around your specific goals, whether that's returning to sport, managing a long-standing niggle, or recovering from a recent injury.

Because JW Physio Clinic is a single, dedicated clinic rather than a large chain, AXA Health members who choose to be treated here tend to appreciate the continuity of seeing the same physiotherapist throughout their course of care, rather than being seen by whoever happens to be available. This consistency often makes a real difference to how quickly problems are identified and how effectively a treatment plan can be adjusted as you progress.

How Referral Generally Works with AXA Health

The referral process for AXA Health members can vary quite a bit depending on the specific policy you or your employer have taken out. Some AXA Health policies include a self-referral pathway for physiotherapy, allowing members to book directly with a physiotherapist without seeing a GP first. Other policies still require a GP or consultant referral before AXA Health will agree to fund treatment. Because this varies from policy to policy — and can even differ between individual and corporate schemes — we'd always recommend checking your own policy documents, or calling AXA Health's member services line, to confirm which route applies to you before booking your first appointment.

If your policy does require a referral, it's worth requesting this as early as possible, since it can sometimes take a few days to come through, and having it ready before your appointment helps avoid any delay in starting your funded treatment.

Authorisation and What to Check Before You Book

Many AXA Health policies require some form of pre-authorisation before physiotherapy sessions are funded — often issued as an authorisation or claim reference number once AXA Health has agreed to cover a set number of sessions. We'd recommend contacting AXA Health before your first appointment to check whether this applies to your policy, and if so, to obtain the reference number in good time.

Before your first appointment, it's worth having the following to hand:

  • Your AXA Health membership or policy number
  • An authorisation or claim reference, if your policy requires one
  • Confirmation of how many sessions have been approved, if known
  • Details of a GP or consultant referral, if your policy requires one
  • Any excess payable under your policy, and whether this has already been used this policy year

If you're not sure about any of these details, our reception team is happy to help you work out what to check, or point you toward AXA Health's member helpline for a definitive answer specific to your cover.

Invoicing for AXA Health Patients

Direct billing — where we invoice your insurer directly for authorised sessions rather than you paying upfront and claiming the cost back — is common practice for many UK insurers, including on a number of AXA Health policies. However, whether this applies to your particular plan can depend on your specific policy type and how your cover has been arranged, so we're not able to guarantee direct billing for every AXA Health member. Please confirm directly with AXA Health, and with our reception team, before your appointment, so that we can set up the correct billing arrangement from the outset and avoid any confusion or unexpected costs.

Where direct billing isn't available for your policy, we can provide a clear, itemised invoice and receipt after each session, which you can submit to AXA Health for reimbursement in the usual way.

Self-Pay Flexibility

If your AXA Health authorisation runs out before you've fully recovered, or your particular policy doesn't cover the whole course of treatment you need, you're always welcome to continue at JW Physio Clinic as a self-pay patient. Many patients choose to do this simply to complete a treatment plan that's already working well for them, without needing to switch clinics or start again elsewhere. Our reception team can talk you through the cost of self-funded sessions at any point during your treatment.

What Happens at Your First Appointment

Regardless of how your treatment is funded, your first appointment at JW Physio Clinic will involve a full clinical assessment. Your physiotherapist will take a detailed history of your problem, carry out a physical examination, and discuss a proposed treatment plan with you, including how many sessions are likely to be beneficial and how often you should attend. This clinical detail is often useful if you later need to request an extension to your AXA Health authorisation, as it gives a clear, evidence-based rationale for further sessions.

If further treatment is needed beyond your originally authorised sessions, we're happy to provide a short clinical update that you can pass on to AXA Health to support a request for extended cover. Any decision on extending authorisation always rests with AXA Health, but we aim to make the supporting information as clear and useful as possible.

Choosing Where to Use Your AXA Health Cover

Most AXA Health policies give members the freedom to choose which physiotherapy clinic they attend, rather than assigning them to a particular provider. This means you're free to select JW Physio Clinic based on whatever matters most to you, whether that's our location in Loughton, the availability of appointment times that fit around your work and family commitments, or simply a recommendation from a friend, colleague or your GP. When you contact AXA Health to arrange authorisation, you'll usually be asked to confirm the name and address of the clinic you'd like to attend, so it's worth having our details ready before you make that call: JW Physio Clinic, Ambrose House, 2 Old Station Road, Loughton, Essex IG10 4PE.

Many AXA Health members tell us they value being able to research a clinic's reputation before committing to treatment. We're proud of the feedback we receive from patients, currently reflected in a 5.0 star rating from 468 Google reviews, and we're happy to answer any questions about our clinical approach before you decide to book, whether you're funding your treatment through AXA Health or paying for it yourself.

Booking as an AXA Health Patient

Once you've checked your policy details with AXA Health and obtained any necessary referral or authorisation, you can book your appointment online or by calling our reception team. Please let us know at the time of booking that your treatment is being funded through AXA Health, so we can make sure your paperwork and billing are set up correctly from your very first visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

This depends on your specific AXA Health policy. Some policies allow self-referral to a physiotherapist, while others require a GP or consultant referral first. Please check your policy documents or call AXA Health's member helpline to confirm before booking.

Many AXA Health policies require pre-authorisation before funded treatment begins, resulting in a claim or authorisation reference. Whether this applies to your policy, and how many sessions it covers, is something only AXA Health can confirm for your individual membership.

Direct billing is common for many UK insurers including AXA Health on certain policies, but this isn't guaranteed for every member or plan. Please confirm directly with AXA Health and with our reception team before your appointment so we can set up the right billing arrangement.

If your authorised sessions run out, or your policy doesn't cover the full cost, you're welcome to continue as a self-pay patient at JW Physio Clinic for any additional treatment you need.
