Do You Need a GP Referral for Physiotherapy?
Self-referral, GP referral and insurance referral explained, so you know exactly how to book your first appointment.
The Short Answer: Usually Not
One of the most common questions we're asked is whether you need to see your GP before booking physiotherapy. For most people, the answer is no. Private physiotherapy, including at JW Physio Clinic, operates on a self-referral basis, meaning you can book an appointment directly with us without needing a letter or referral from your GP first. This is one of the practical advantages of private physiotherapy — it removes a step that can otherwise add days or weeks of waiting before you're even seen, at a time when getting assessed and starting treatment sooner rather than later often makes a real difference to your recovery.
Physiotherapists are trained as autonomous, first-contact practitioners, meaning we're qualified to assess, diagnose and treat musculoskeletal conditions directly, and to identify and refer on appropriately if something needs input from a GP, a specialist, or further investigation such as imaging. So booking directly with a physiotherapist isn't a lesser or less thorough route than going via your GP first — for the vast majority of musculoskeletal complaints, it's simply a more direct one.
When a GP Referral IS Typically Needed
There are some circumstances where a GP referral is either required or genuinely useful:
- NHS physiotherapy pathways. If you're hoping to access physiotherapy through the NHS rather than privately, many (though not all) NHS pathways require a GP referral, or referral via an NHS self-referral scheme where one exists locally. This varies by area and by NHS trust.
- Some private medical insurance policies. Certain insurance policies require a GP referral letter before they'll authorise cover for physiotherapy treatment, particularly for a new complaint. This varies considerably between insurers and policy types, so it's always worth checking your specific policy.
- Complex or unclear presentations. If your physiotherapist identifies something during assessment that would benefit from GP input, further investigation, or specialist referral, they'll recommend this regardless of how you originally came to be seen.
- Certain medico-legal or occupational health pathways where a referral is part of a formal process (see below).
How Insurance Referral Works
If you're planning to use private medical insurance to cover your physiotherapy treatment, the process generally involves contacting your insurer to obtain authorisation before your appointment, which may or may not require a GP referral letter depending on your specific policy and insurer. We're recognised by all major health insurers and can help guide you through what's typically needed, though the details of your cover are ultimately something only your insurer can confirm. For a fuller explanation of how insurance-funded physiotherapy works with us, see our insurance page.
How Medico-Legal Referrals Work Differently
Medico-legal referrals are a distinct process from a standard patient booking a physiotherapy appointment for their own treatment. These referrals come from solicitors, insurers or case management companies, typically in the context of a personal injury or workplace injury claim, and involve an independent musculoskeletal assessment and expert report rather than a routine treatment booking. If you've been asked to attend an appointment with us as part of a medico-legal claim, this will usually have been arranged directly between the instructing solicitor or case manager and our clinic, rather than through our normal booking process. You can read more about how this works on our medico-legal reporting page, which is aimed primarily at solicitors and case managers making a referral.
